We are located at the corner of Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, in the heart of the Westport District. Westport was once the western-most settlement in the United States and part of the Santa Fe Trail. Civil War sites, which are well worth the tour, are dotted throughout the area. Today, Westport is the nightlife center of the city and features numerous bars, dance clubs and restaurants. It is also home to a thriving retail district. Visitors to Kansas City must experience the fun and friendly atmosphere of Westport. HISTORY OF THE "PUBLIC HOUSE" Throughout the history of this great nation, citizens of all class and status have gathered together to discuss the issues of the day. The place to meet for this purpose was known as the "Public House". Often located in the first floor of a town's Inn, the Public House was a place where politicians preached from soap boxes, folks tested their board game skills, and musicians strutted their stuff. Public Houses often served as an extension of the government. With court houses primarily located in large cities, circuit-riding judges frequently chose Public Houses for holding court in smaller communities. Our very own Constitution had key aspects formulated in a Public House. The great diarist of the Constitutional Convention, James Madison, noted that delegates frequently met at Public Houses to share a brandy, beer, and game of Backgammon. It was at such times when many fundamental issues of our Constitution were resolved. Our Public House is named after John McCoy, the founder of Westport. Mr. McCoy was a citizen of the area, as are the people in the photos and murals featured around the restaurant.
